Training courses offered internationally

In addition to all the courses in German (see "Bildungsangebote"), the following courses are being offered in English and can be carried out in Bad Wildungen or at any other place worldwide (if the necessary machinery is available there).

Training skills (Two weeks)

Master courses for joiners and wood processing mechanics are a main focus of the College of Wood Technology in Bad Wildungen. Master craftsmen in Germany are not only highly skilled in their handcraft and the use of the latest machinery but also educated to run their own company and to teach apprentices.

The training of trainers in foreign countries (for schools and companies) has to cover technical courses as listed below as well as a course providing some basic knowledge of pedagogy and an understanding of the special situation of teenagers. On-the-job training is different from lectures in schools and needs special preconditions to be fulfilled and an adapted way of teaching. Therefore in Germany a special course with an exam is obligatory for people who want to employ apprentices in their company. This course - without covering the German rules and regulations of vocational training - is being offered here.

Timber – Basics (Two days, eventually by e-learning) 

• Wood growth and structure (trunk; faults in logs)
• Composition of wood (cells, chemistry)
• Properties of wood (faults in sawn wood; physical and mechanical properties, wood and water – swelling and shrinkage; insects and fungi as destroyers of wood)

Wood seasoning (One day + hands-on training)

• Basics
• Air drying
• Kiln drying
• Practical exercises: stacking, kiln, moisture measurements etc.

Wood working I (One or two days + one week of hands-on training)

• Selection and cutting of timber
• Planing: surface planer, thickness planing machine
• Edge gluing
• Milling
• Sanding

Wood working II (Three days + three weeks of hands-on training)

• Corner joints I (nailed, screwed, doweled (Lamello))
• Corner joints II (tongue and groove, mortise and tenon, dovetail etc.)
• Finger jointing
• Frames and infill

Use of wood-based panels (Two day + one week: assembling of a wardrobe)

• Types and production technologies of different panels (plywood, block board, chip board, oriented strands board, MDF and other fibre boards)
• Edge banding (with different types of edges)
• Corer joints (dowel, Lamello)
• Fittings

Basics of surface treatment (One week with hands-on training)

• Preparation (cleaning, deresination, watering, removal of glue residues, plugging, removal of stains, filling, bleaching)
• Sanding (tools and materials)
• Bleaching agents and methods
• Varnishes, stains, oils, resins
• Priming and finishing
• Coating, rolling, spraying
• Drying
• Suction cleaning and environmental protection

Machines and prevention of accidents (One week)

• Sawing machines (band saw, circular saw, and saw blades)
• Planing machines (surface planer, thickness planing machine, profiling machine, and cutterblocks)
• Shaping (table moulding machine and tools)
• Boring (box column drill, slot boring machines, dowel boring machines, and borers)

Construction and production of wooden windows (Two weeks)

• Basics (site measuring, work preparation, construction, machines, production process)
• Processing (machining, frame production, surface, fittings, glazing, joints, assembly)
